Hi, I'm Desiree, a content strategist in San Francisco.
My passion is creating things that delight, educate, and inspire others.
When not working, you’ll find me walking my dog, devouring a book, crafting something colorful, or hunting for the best dirty chai latte.
A little more about me…
Good writing at its core combines vast creativity and sharp editing skills, but I wasn't always a professional writer. This is how my non-traditional path got me here:
I spent 15 years in sales and business operations before I became a professional writer. In these roles, being able to communicate with a diverse, ever-changing audience in an engaging and empathetic way was key. Through this experience, I honed my ability to craft persuasive, concise messages with clear next steps.
I'd rather create great products than just sell them.
In 2017, I pivoted out of sales leadership to become the Content Operations Lead at Hoodline. It was a natural and exciting next step in my career. I led our datawire editorial team that published over 7000 data stories and 600 videos per month for brands like ABC, Hearst, Yahoo, CBS and more. I thrived in this role as it combined my communication and leadership skills with my love for creating things with detail-focused polish.
This same year, I launched SF Date Nights with my friend Christina. After years of working in the local discovery space, we were constantly being asked for date ideas. We loved exploring the city together and wanted to create an online tool to help others have enriching offline experiences. It was a personal passion project that garnered thousands of fans.
I love writing for clarity and creating delightful UX experiences.
In 2019, Nextdoor acquired Hoodline and I became their first UX content designer for all products under the Nextdoor for Business umbrella. In my 3.5 years there, I spearheaded the UX content design for every business facing and revenue producing product. I overhauled our onboarding processes, payment flows, styleguide, and launched new B2B products collaboratively pre and post-IPO.
Editing down UX content to only the essentials while keeping our brand voice alive was a unique challenge. Rather than writing to wow or persuade people to buy something, my goal was to eliminate complexity so people could fly through multi-step process screens quickly and with full understanding of how to use a new product or service. Being user-centric in my content design allowed me to help local businesses thrive by connecting them with the best customers in their area.
The screens I was responsible for accounted for over 33% of Nextdoor's revenue. My content on the Treat Map helped Nextdoor to win a Platinum MUSE award for our virtual-reality Treat Map during the pandemic.
I was a lead in Nextdoor’s Vecinos ERG for LatinX people. I advocated for diversity and inclusion in our hiring, product, and policy practices.
Resiliency, hard work, and grit are the main ingredients to my success.
I love rooting for the underdog and dreaming up new ways to encourage people to achieve their goals.
In my next role, I’m looking to stay in a collaborative environment to create an enriching experience for our target audience.
